The General In His Labyrinth The Music That Rocks This House

Gimme Shelter!

Page 98: The Final Leg

The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio.

The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? With no actual prior construction experience? Hmmmmm - let's check in on our Contestants and see how they're doing...
As we close in on being able to move into The Garage Mahal, we see here (1) the newly-installed pantry door; (2) the workbench and tool storage area (it only took me 3 years to get organized); and (3) management hanging around in case there are any dog biscuits involved. A Long Look
A look out a living room window across the courtyard reveals a stunningly functional and newly-installed door leading into the master bedroom suite. The courtyard is going to look nice with murals, climbing roses and a fountain. My future sanctum sanctorum.
Typical of what I'm working on this week are smaller jobs such as (1) the controls for the whole-house fan and (2) running a cold water line towards the kitchen. Small stuff, but it adds up - at least in theory. Putting it all together
Another small project is prepping the main kitchen wall for finishing. At the bottom of the photo, you can see one of the studs attached to the wall with adhesives prior to putting up sheetrock. After getting the 2x4 studs on, we are ready to lay cement in to fill in and smooth out the window sills. Related to Beverly Sills?
As the sun sets slowly over this, our own small chunk o' Empire, we take a last, lingering, loving and certainly loquacious look down the length of the living room from la cocina. I think we can safely say we are on the final leg of our race instead of on our last legs... A Room With A View
