Page 97: A Chip On My Shoulder

The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio.

The arrival of spring (and spring windstorms) prompts your humble correspondent to fell all the dead trees around the house. This one, however, hit the house dead-on. A few chips on the shoulder and a scramble with a running chain saw aside, the excitement is over pretty quickly. What, me worry? A Board of Education?
The tree, a fairly large oak, has left no more than a few scuff marks after hitting the top of the parapet, breaking in two and bouncing off the wall all the way to the ground. These aren't the only brown marks the tree caused...
Would a conventional frame lumber and drywall house stand up to a falling tree of this size? I'm not any more worried about windstorms or falling trees than I am about fire, insects or wood rot in a ferrocement house. Speaking softly and carrying a big stick
After stripping the floor with muriatic acid and then power-washing it, we have applied a base coat of terra cotta colored concrete sealer. Designed for high-traffic garage and retail areas, this will certainly hold up well in a residential environment. Terra cotta cognita
