The General In His Labyrinth The Music That Rocks This House

Gimme Shelter!

Page 83: Closing In

The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio.

The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? With no actual prior construction experience? Hmmmmm - let's check in on our Contestants and see how they're doing...
What is this photo of and why is it here? The answer: I've been busy for the last 6 weeks moving my mother down here and this is a photo of the moving truck. It's included here as a reminder that while you're DIY building, you've still got a life, a job, obligations and families to attend to. Make allowances for the inevitable delays in your construction schedule... Push Comes To Shovel...
Back home in Texas again! I get out to the construction site to get the job restarted and have the pleasure of a visit from Frank and Debra, who have been following this website for awhile and have come to the conclusion that if your humble correspondent can pull this off, they can too. Thanks for the visit, guys, it was a pleasure giving y'all the 25 cent tour. Too nice for their occupations?
Before leaving town I let the end of a roll of poultry wire down from the roof and anchored it with a couple of blocks. I've had morning glory vines growing in the courtyard, so I twisted a few into the wire to let it create a bio-tapestry. When we decorate the courtyard, we'll probably try this with climbing vines like Confederate Jasmine. The pink at right is part of the foam for a window header. The Green Screen
Picking up where we left off means getting a chance to apply meshcrete to the headers like these that we put up. The roof needs to be sealed up, too. Hmmmmmmmm, we could sure use a new cement mixer. Maybe my 50th birthday party will take care of the problem... A hole in the header
My brand new birthday combination cement mixer/cocktail shaker sits next to the other components for successful DIY construction: A cheap, efficient cement elevator, a few wheelbarrows and a couple of members of project management to do whatever it is management does. Time to get to work! My Dominion
