Our Third Week of Wall Building

The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio.

The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? With no actual prior construction experience? Hmmmmm - let's check in on our Contestants and see how they're doing...
One of our small innovations - pouring odd-size blocks in place. A little duct tape on the sides, a bit of construction paper on the bottom, add a little concrete and problem solved! Necessity is the mother of intervention, I always say... Poor-In-Place solution
These windows will be over the kitchen sink, looking out towards the water and the driveway. Notice the lintel over the window runs into the end of a glued into place quarter block laying on its side. Jigsaw and crossword puzzle fans will do very well with this construction method. Lotsa luck with window bucks
More of our bargain bin windows going up in the living room. Living room windows
Most of this week is taken up with fitting windows into place and then leveling all the blocks around them. Here, we have two half-moon windows (we got a set of three) which are in the southwest corner in the master bedroom. Half moon windows.
Looking across the courtyard from the guest wing towards the master wing. The First Courtyard of Appeal.
