The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio. The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? With no actual prior construction experience? Hmmmmm - let's check in on our Contestants and see how they're doing... |
| This week we finish off the cladding of the outside walls, closely supervised by a member of project management. We start on Monday and work around various rain delays laying the nylon mesh and hand-troweling the concrete into the dry stack block walls. In this photo, we're working from this corner to a point just between the doorway and window furthest to the right. | ![]() |
| A spot of clear weather with sunshine and temperatures in the mid 50's gets us back on the job and making progress. | ![]() |
| While slower than using a sprayer, the hand troweling gives us the opportunity to get a smooth and effective finish. In this closeup, you can see the effects of using my palms (inside heavy rubber gloves) to smooth this wall finish down into an impermeable, dense texture. Our final step will be painting the walls with Kool White elastomeric compound. | ![]() |
| The end of a very long day Thursday and we've finished the outside wall cladding. Flushed with success, glory and various aching joints we pause to survey our domain. Here is a look at the west wall which we've done over the last couple of weeks... | ![]() |
| ...and a look at the south wall, which we've finished this week. Friday morning comes and there is no time to rest on our gracefully-aging laurels as we've got the walls of the courtyard to finish before we can finally start on the roof. Time to pack my B.B. King CD's, a couple of cold bottles of Guinness, saddle up project management and get a jump start on next week's task list. | ![]() |
