The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio. The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? With no actual prior construction experience? Hmmmmm - let's check in on our Contestants and see how they're doing... |
| A return visit by my in-laws means I benefit from having a retired electrician on site. This week, we drill, pull, screw, bend, connect and otherwise labor over wiring the house. Here, we put in wiring runs for the light over the kitchen sink and a switch for it. | ![]() |
| We begin planning our wiring runs and opt for a combination of running Romex (the generic name for electrical wiring) down through block cores where convenient and using conduit pipe for the rest. A pipe bender is invaluable for getting the proper angles in conduit and any free-range mortgage bankers who wander by. | ![]() |
| The living room plugs are serviced by Romex running through baseboards made of 1x6 lumber. Management, of course, has to closely inspect the work to make sure there is no food hidden away that might need to be eaten. | ![]() |
| Yep, feeling every bit as glamorous as I look, I start the work of pulling lengths of wire through the holes I've drilled to route it. The holes keep the wiring up and out of the way of whatever work we will do to add a ceiling. Hard work, achy muscles and lack of sleep are starting to take their toll. | ![]() |
| DIY triumph ensues as The Wife and her dad check out a working test light bulb, visible up near the top of the photo. I was going to make a terrible pun about Don here being our Prometheus, but I decided (WARNING: terrible Greek mythology pun ahead) I'd live and let liver. | ![]() |
