The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio. The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? | In response to Brian from Ohio (hi Brian!) I am starting off with a closeup photo of what we're calling a drainage block. We have slopes designed into the roof to facilitate rain runoff, which will be drained from the roof at 3 spots, each through a block set on its side. Rain is shunted toward the parapet blocks along the outer walls where it is channeled into PVC guttering that slopes downhill toward the drain blocks. Whew...I'm drained just explaining all that. | We now have joists covering about 45 percent of the house. Here, we see the joists over the second master bedroom stretching out to cover the pantry. This being Texas, we're already hitting 100 degrees F during the afternoons - a good incentive to get this roofing stuff finished up! | ![]() |
| After the joists go up but before the ferrocement roofing, we lay down fencing panels for decking and put up the parapet blocks for the inside wall. | ![]() |
| As long as The Wife isn't around, I can make jokes about these being standard equipment for longtime married men, but let's keep that just between you and me, okay? I tore up a pair of cheap kneepads in less than a day crawling around on the roofing. These puppies were a whopping $25, but worth every penny. Now if they just made my legs prettier... | ![]() |
