The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio. The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? With no actual prior construction experience? Hmmmmm - let's check in on our Contestants and see how they're doing... |
| While I wait for my roofing supplies to be delivered, I spend the week cleaning, finishing various spots in the walls and planning. I *finally* get my workbench organized. I now have a rollup tarp for shade and cover, a place for my tools and an area I can use for the mitre saw. I was going to say "I came, I saw, I mitred" but that would have been too horrible a pun to make in public, right? On the left is a roll of the 6 mil plastic sheeting which will be used in the roofing. | ![]() |
| I get the unexpected pleasure of a visit from an entire familial group from San Marcos. A lovely group of folks, they all arrived in one vehicle and kept emerging in ones and twos. Between them, myself and the dogs, we had quite a parade going around the homesite. It's nice to be reminded periodically that building a home is the most human of all enterprises and interaction with other people can be a significant, if frequently overlooked, source of pleasure for a weary DIY builder. Thanks, guys... | ![]() |
| The walls on each side of the kitchen get filled in. We like these screen blocks (the crosses fit in with the Spanish mission theme) and are using them as accents throughout the house. These walls stop short of the 10 foot ceilings to aid in keeping warm air flowing towards the adjacent thermal chimney from the kitchen area. | ![]() |
| The walls of the toilet enclosure in the master suite get filled in and are looking much better than a couple of weeks ago. I get a few bags of masonry readymix and fill in holes and gaps, as well as fill out some wavy wall areas - a particularly user-friendly aspect of dry block construction. A person inclined towards puns might ask if all the cement work made me ready to throw in the "trowel." Fortunately, I'd never stoop to low humor like that... | ![]() |
| Hmmmmm....this is either a photo of my daughter's luggage for a weekend trip or it's a bunch of Perlite which the lumber yard delivery guys thoughtfully stacked in my entryway to protect it from rain. The Perlite will be mixed with Portland cement to make the lightweight insulating concrete we will use for the roof. We also get in a bunch of 2x6 joists, two pallets of 4x8x16 blocks for the parapets and about a ton of cement. Let's party! | ![]() |
