Our Seventeenth Week of Wall Building The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio. The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? With no actual prior construction experience? Hmmmmm - let's check in on our Contestants and see how they're doing... |
| My family from Indiana visit over the holidays, with my father-in-law, an ace electrician and all around good guy, supervising the initial lay in of the wiring. The good, solid work table my mother-in-law set up for us is at rear. She made it out of some old concrete forms and a bunch of concrete blocks. Good folks... | ![]() |
| We set up the disconnect box at the power pole, wrestling with the thick #2 wire we will use to bring the power from the pole into the house. | ![]() |
| Next, we drill the necessary holes and set up an access box which will route the #2 wire into the house's breaker box. | ![]() |
| We dig a trench, somewhat hampered by all the standing water on the ground from recent rains. The #2 wire will be run through this PVC conduit, which will be buried. | ![]() |
| The wiring runs from the circuit panel, seen at left, inside baseboards which hold the electrical outlets. | ![]() |
