The General In His Labyrinth The Music That Rocks This House

Gimme Shelter!

Page 18 - Wired and Tired

Our Seventeenth Week of Wall Building

The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio.

The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? With no actual prior construction experience? Hmmmmm - let's check in on our Contestants and see how they're doing...
My family from Indiana visit over the holidays, with my father-in-law, an ace electrician and all around good guy, supervising the initial lay in of the wiring. The good, solid work table my mother-in-law set up for us is at rear. She made it out of some old concrete forms and a bunch of concrete blocks. Good folks... Thanks...
We set up the disconnect box at the power pole, wrestling with the thick #2 wire we will use to bring the power from the pole into the house. The pole position
Next, we drill the necessary holes and set up an access box which will route the #2 wire into the house's breaker box. Access success
We dig a trench, somewhat hampered by all the standing water on the ground from recent rains. The #2 wire will be run through this PVC conduit, which will be buried. A trenchant situation
The wiring runs from the circuit panel, seen at left, inside baseboards which hold the electrical outlets. Captain...we have power!
