The General In His Labyrinth The Music That Rocks This House

Gimme Shelter!

Page 16 - A Block Off The Old Chip...

Our Fifteenth Week of Wall Building

The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio.

The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? With no actual prior construction experience? Hmmmmm - let's check in on our Contestants and see how they're doing...
This week's effort? Getting the outer walls up to 15 courses and adding a 16th course to the courtyard walls. The photo at right shows the 16th course around the courtyard, which will carry the electrical and water conduits through the house. From here, branch circuits and water lines either drop through the block walls to outlets/faucets or are carried into the interior walls, which will be made of studs and drywall. Line Dance
A senior member of the management team inspects the master bedroom wing, seen here through an outside window. Straight ahead are the courtyard and guest wing. To the left is the living/kitchen wing. The dog says it's OK
The master bedroom wing seen from outside. The Wife's leaded glass windows are going to take some work to finish the wall around, but sure do look good. Are we done yet?
The eastern wall, in all it's unfinished glory. We are still stunned at the size and scope of this project, even though we've laid every single block of it. Again, this is all being done mostly by one man, hand tools, buckets and a whole lot of sweat equity - a solid recommendation for this approach to building the house we want. After all, if *I* can do this... Hadrian would approve
The east wing, which will contain my recording studio, storage, a craft area for The Wife and her dressing area. Notice the half moon window in the aforementioned dressing area and set to catch the morning sun. Directly across from this is a huge picture window onto the courtyard. Slowly but surely
