The General In His Labyrinth The Music That Rocks This House

Gimme Shelter!

Page 15 - Raising Walls and Cain

Our Fourteenth Week of Wall Building

The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio.

The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? With no actual prior construction experience? Hmmmmm - let's check in on our Contestants and see how they're doing...
Ahhhh - December in Austin. The heat of summer is gone and we've still got blooming flowers and fat dragonflies after a chill and rainy November. The East coast may be snowbound and iced over already but we bask in the sunshine. Purple Reign
Even tired and cranky owner/builders enjoy some sun while working... A son of the sun
This week, we continue our work on raising the outer walls to the 15th course, at which point we will put the insulation in the walls and lay in plumbing and wiring runs. The kitchen windows are seen here. Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah
The Western Wall is finally up. The stove closet is at left, the kitchen windows seen above at right. One of the cedar beams (there will be 3 in this wing) is seen in the living room area at the other end of the house. We've had to cut a number of cedars at the house site, all of which will be used in the house construction. Almost home
The house, so far, as seen from the driveway. Note the water level in the tank is pretty high after all the rain in November. Good thing I've got all my tools put away and the cement tarped over, we've got rain forecast for tomorrow (sigh)... A view from abroad
