Gimme Shelter!
The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio. The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? | We're going to take a close look at our hot water plumbing in response to an e-mailed request from Canada (hi Lou!). It all starts here with our on-demand water heater and attached flexible hot water tubing. This was all as easy to install as it looks, folks. | ![]() |
| For the kitchen sink, we have plumbing (and electrical conduits) installed along with studs for the drywall which will cover the utility lines. Note the tchatchke niches in the wall. Your exceedingly lazy correspondent has apparently only plastered the areas of the wall that won't be covered by cabinets. | ![]() |
| Here is a closer look at the flexible tubing and a "T" junction for the master bath. Note the copper crimp ring around the tube to secure the tubing to the fitting. Like I said, it's as easy to install as it looks, which leads us to... | ![]() |
| More flexible than even a politician offered a bribe, this tubing can be snaked just about anywhere in one long, seamless run of conduit. The life expectancy is approximately the same as copper with no need for a torch and solder. | ![]() |
| The plaster on the walls is sealed with a primer/topcoat that also smooths out the cracks and bumps in the plaster job. In this photo, the sealed plaster is visible on the left next to the rest of the job, which I'd better get on with since I hear thunderstorms coming. | ![]() |
