Gimme Shelter!

Page 10 - And The Beat Goes On...

Our Fifth Week of Wall Building

The Project: A 2,163 square foot house utilizing dry stack concrete block construction with a central courtyard and based on the Spanish colonial-era missions in San Antonio.

The Challenge: Can a forty-something married couple design and build an attractive, efficient and mostly paid-for house while remaining sane, solvent and married? With no actual prior construction experience? Hmmmmm - let's check in on our Contestants and see how they're doing...
These windows are Melinda's personal labor o' love and crown jewels of the dressing area and master bath. The flexibility that goes with building using the dry stack block method means we can accomodate windows as thin as these guys and as wide as the six footers that look onto the courtyard. With six you get eggroll
Melinda illustrates our continuing task of aligning blocks. Note to all married men: Talk nice if The Wife is carrying a mallet. This photo taken in the courtyard. The beat goes on
My life this week involves cement, cement and more cement. These vertical columns of cement and rebar are spaced every four feet, are tied in to the rebar embedded in the foundation and will eventually tie in to the roofing joists. A member of the management team is underneath the ladder supervising construction. This ain't no fashion show runway
This would be a good time to sing the praises of having an old pickup truck. This one hauls blocks, serves as a workbench and will be hauling some massive tree trunks out of the way. If you're contemplating building like this, a couple of thousand dollars for an old, beat up truck is a lot of bang for your buck. The mitre saw in the foreground is another handy tool to have for window bucks and other odds and ends. Tools you've got to have
Elbow, wrist and back braces are all required equipment, speaking of tools. If you're DIY builders, you simply have to take care of yourselves. I am always nagging my charming and talented spouse to lift with her legs, not her back. Being an equal opportunity nag, I'm taking this opportunity to start nagging casual readers of this website, too. Fashion accessories for the DIY couple
